The central topics of my scientific work range from the neurobiological foundations of emotional processes to clinical application in psychiatry and psychotherapy.

My scientific focus
  • In neurology: movement disorders
  • After switching to psychiatry (1994): treatment of depression and emotion research
  • Various studies, including those using functional magnetic resonance imaging, culminated in my 2004 habilitation thesis on the neurobiology and clinical determination of fascinating phenomenon of Emotional Contagion.
  • I gained scientific recognition in particular through my research on humor (including the publication of two specialist books on humor in psychiatry and psychotherapy). I have been studying this phenomenon for over 15 years (from the neurobiology of joke perception to the benefits of humor in psychotherapy).
  • Humor training: Humor is an important skill that facilitates interpersonal contact and helps people cope with difficult life situations. This skill can also be taught. This is, of course, also relevant for patients with mental illnesses.
